How does one honor the Creator without representation?
It's important for me individually not to get lost in the symbol as holy but the concept behind it as holy.
For me no group has met this challenge more thoughtfully or artistically than the Islamic school.
The law of The Koran is social as well as spiritual. Being that The Koran expressly forbids representational images, the artists were inclined toward geometric, calligraphic and vegetal forms.
Designs were passed from centers of temporal and spiritual power. The same designs are found throughout all media i.e. book illuminations, carving, metalwork and pottery.
